This week we have the Weathertop assignment. Either a video tour, or an essay is required (but for that you need a screenshot too), meaning we need to climb Weathertop regardless of the selected option.

Luckily we have a lot of players with the right level (the Prof. is suggesting level22 or above), but also have a good number of players below level 20. That's not really a problem. Being at level 20ish is only necessary for the "Retake Weathertop" quest, which is the first fellowship quest (-> advised to bring a group) on the Epic story.
Those who want to complete the assignment with an in-game video, that quest is a good pick: it has a plot, cunning use of fire, goblins and orcs during the way upwards, and on the top there's a huge troll. It's a great story on its own. The quest is available as solo too (a late addition to the game for those who can't gather a group), that way you receive a huge buff, for being able to survive the fight.
You can take the quest at lower levels too (I think level 17 is the minimum), the only pre-requirement is to finish the first Book in Bree. Spoiler: after you finish with Bombadil and the Barrow, Strider and the hobbits are already gone, but you meet with Gandalf. Then you're sent to the Ranger Candaith at Weathertop.

Still, those who are only in the middle of Bree, no worries. You can still make both the video or the screenshot, without any quest. Weathertop is an open landscape area, we passed by it many times during the chicken runs. All you need is an escort during the way.
The way up is much shorter than a chicken run was (climbing to the top takes a couple minutes, tops), and also it doesn't need a very high level player, a 20ish one is good enough. When not in the quest, Weathertop has only a few birds and boars on its road upwards, and around its skirt some goblin camps. Not a real threat for any escort above level 20ish :)
So there's a good chance that any time you'll make an attempt for it, there will be kin members in-game who will help you to the top.

I plan to be in-game during the next few days more, than I was during last week. Already made a couple of nice screenshots last night, but I'll gladly take a few more... So if you need an escort, I'm -as the dwarves say- "At your service" :)

(if you choose to make a video for the assignment, there's a good thread on the course forum with suggested free video capture softwares: Coursera link )

I'd love to come with a big group for lovely screenies. If you are interested, drop me a line in game or send a letter.
I am happy to help escorting lower levels up too - I have one problem though: orientation! I always forget the straight way up the hill. <giggles>

Love to join you also. I'm a mildly frustrated noob hobbit struggling with a Mac keyboard (which doesn't always do what a PC might - e.g. F12 = increased volume! Yet to find the equivalent key combination)
Many thanks.

Try changing the hot key setting in option (esc)? Change that thing from F12 to any other key you can use? (Not sure if hiding UI is one of the changeable option but I did change all my camera rotation keys as my laptop does not have number lock)

I am sorry Serattil - I had a typo on this forum.....your name is spelled correctly on the video!

I described Eriendur as stranger, because he is not a member of Coursera. Makes the setting a bit more dramatic. ;D

I am ashamed that I haven't met Eriendur before Weathertop - I thought he was some random Elf joining us. :*(

Weathertop Video - enjoy! And please forgive the typos I have found....I am ashamed. *:|

Oh, it's really a deep analysis and a interesting adventure at the same time.
I chose to compare my own experiences, so it's less academic :)

Enjoy ~

Just finished both, great videos!

Celge, some of your lines I written in my essay the exact same way - days ago, I swear I not stole from you :) Was nice to see that I'm not the only one who thinks the game's interpretation is more accurate than the movie. You also mentioned you haven't found the hobbit resting place, you can check it in Sil's video :)

Sil, your accent is miles better than mine :D

I am a bit scared that the academic style may reflect on my evaluation results....

I am student of English Philology - I can't help it. >:)

I liked your video very much Sil. It is nicely presented and focuses on all important features among the three media.
I would have loved to put dawn into my video but I couldn't be a**** to descend once more....I had I don't know how many hours of footage from the quest and the descends I did before....

I loved that you put the handstand in....you know I forgot it and discovered it shortly before I compiled the video project....haha it was a MUST to implement because it was so tough to get it done.

And don't worry about your accent, it is all fine! I have been to the Metaphor Conference in Budapest in June and there were academics for English linguistics who also had an accent. Some of them sometimes have a really bad one, too!
